Fossicking

It was gold that first attracted those seeking their fortune to the South Burnett, with showings near Kilkivan in 1852 and later Seven Mile Diggings near Nanango in 1866.

Today visitors can still hope to find some of the elusive yellow metal on a visit to the South Burnett's fossicking areas. The Prophet Gold Mine near Kilkivan is another popular attraction in the region. Staff at the mine provide visitors with a wealth of information and you can also watch gold being poured.

With its rich, red volcanic soil the South Burnett is famous for its gem fossicking areas, with visitors coming from far and wide seeking their fortune with a rare jewel.
However most are just happy to find something they can take home with them.

Fossicking areas

Jasper Fields, Cloyna (west of Murgon) - small rural settlement well known now for fossicking. Fossickers can search for jasper, agate, crystal, amethyst, bloodstone and pertrified wood.

Nambadi, Windera (north of Murgon) - another rural settlement also becoming well known among fossickers. Fossickers can expect to find agate, jasper, petrified wood and quartz.
